There is strong support for Spirit Place as evidenced by the large number of organizations and individuals who have indicated their encouragement for the project. Over 700 people signed a statement of support and dozens of letters have been received. Here are a few excerpts:
“We believe this project will enhance the neighbourhood in so many ways, including the access to community space and the attractive design of the building, which will only enhance property values and the livability of the neighbourhood in general.”
Ian and Deb Paterson, property owners on Willow Street
“We strongly support this project. Spirit Place would meet the needs of the seniors in our community by providing a safe and secure home in their own community at an affordable price with timely access to care services and daily living support.”
Kristin Schmitz, Executive Director, Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home
“The proposed design will bring life, people, mixed use, and activity into the area. Such a project can help revitalize Windsor Street and the surrounding area by making the location more desirable for future supporting development for use by the existing community.”
Elizabeth Walling, Degrees in Environmental Design and a Masters in Architecture
“The proportion of seniors is expected to double within the next 20 years. Changes to policy at all levels will be required to meet the needs and demands that this population will have. Housing is a priority now and the need will only grow. The approach to planning, constructing and operating Spirit Place is consistent with the knowledge and evidence about housing for our older population and we encourage you to consider such evidence in your deliberations.”
Janice Keefe, Director, Nova Scotia Centre on Aging
“On a personal level, Spirit place would be a wonderful place for my husband and I to live, especially as my husband is severely vision impaired and I am severely hearing impaired; it would provide a safe and familiar setting for us and we would be close to our neighbours and friends.”
Sally Osberg, neighbor living on North Street near the proposed Spirit Place
“The Halifax Community Health Board supports and encourages the Spirit Place project and the continued outreach work of St. John’s United Church because we believe both contribute positively to improving the overall health of our community.”
